- Archaeological research on the Pietra di Bismantova was started in the second half of the 19th century. The first archaeological excavation in the medieval castle was conducted by Gaetano Chierici. His research was very important for the history of Bismantova however, it left many questions unanswered. For this reason, in 2012 the University of Bologna, together with the Municipal Museums of Reggio Emilia, started a project aimed at a better understanding of the medieval settlement of Bismantova. Just as Gaetano Chierici did, the archaeologists chose to focus their fieldwork on the medieval castle in accordance with the objectives of the project. During the archaeological excavations we discovered ruins of the principal tower, the castle wall, another tower and some buildings inside. At the same time, the archaeological research was also focused on the analysis of the building techniques and the wall structures in order to discern the main architectural phases. Lastly, special attention was directed to the material culture through the study of coarse ware, tableware (glazed wares) and small metal finds. The results we achieved proved the importance of this archaeological site and made it possible to define with more precision the period of occupation of the castle which occurred between the 12 century. Late Roman and early medieval phases seem to be absent, probably because they are located in another area on Pietra di Bismantova. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
