Abstract (English):
Multiple myeloma is a cancer that is considered to be a chronic disease today, due to novel therapies prolonging survival. It is therefore necessary to formally define the content of therapeutic education programs. The French Association of Multiple Myeloma Patients produced a competency framework for multiple myeloma patients and created tools helping the educational diagnosis referring to the patient's knowledge about its treatment, and the associated beliefs. This material enabled a prospective observational survey during five months in two hospitals, through semi-structured interviews to assess patient's knowledge about its treatment, and the importance given for each drug using a score. Twenty-six interviews were conducted. Patients could generally not mention all their treatments and resorted to self-medication. Strong representations were recorded, with less importance given to anti-thrombotic and anti-infectives drugs even though the risks against which they are fighting are vital. The highest scores were given to anti-cancer drugs and supportive care such as painkillers. Other tools have been built to meet patient training needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
