Abstract (English):
Amethyst is usually heat-treated to obtain a yellow-orange to yellow-brown coloring, known as citrine. Another variety that can be obtained with heat treatment is the green coloration, obtained in amethyst crystals of the region of Montezuma (MG) and Nevada (United States). The aim of this work is to consider another type of amethyst treatment through exposure to ionizing radiation by spectroscopy in the infrared region. The amethyst samples were divided into non-irradiated and irradiated groups, which were subjected to gamma radiation with Co-60 source stored dry and 900 kGy dose. Irradiation modified the color of the amethyst crystals to dark violet and black tones. In some irradiated samples, the violet color of the apical portion presented more intense saturation with respect to the inferior portion, indicating chemical zonation. In the infrared region of the irradiated samples there was an increase in the absorption intensity of the bands at 3300, 3200, 2676 and 2597 cm. Darkening of the samples after irradiation may be related to the presence of aluminum. With these results, treatment by gamma radiation in amethyst may improve its classification by color intensity used for commerce of this gem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
