Abstract (English):
Ismail Hakkı Bursevī (d. 1137/1725) is a scholar-Sufi of the Akbarī tradition who is widely known among Ottoman scholars and Sufis for his prolific works. Among his works, the allegorical exegesis Rūḥ al-Bayān is of singular importance. This paper, which deals with Ismail Hakkı Bursevī's treatise on the ḥadīth 'The believer is a mirror of his fellow believer', will examine Ismail Hakkı Bursevī's perspective on allegorical exegesis, the delicate balance that he observes in his literal and esoteric interpretations, alongside the Akbarian 'Afīf al-Dīn Tilimsānī's (d. 690/1291) interpretation of the ḥadīth that the Quran possesses an outer, inner, limited, and highest meaning. This interpretation of Tilimsānī's, which integrates his general classification of the Islamic sciences, can be summarized as follows: evaluating the interpretations advanced on the Quran and ḥadīths which have a meaning of outer/knowledge/ilm and inner/gnosis/ma'rifah, and the points at which they are separated/ḥadd and and united/maṭla' are, as parts of a whole, all within a single meaning. Another aspect of this evaluation is based on the classification of the tripartite 'ilm-'irfān-taḥqīq in the works of 'Afīf al-Dīn Tilimsānī. It is difficult to find when it comes to other Sufis the likes of 'Afīf al-Dīn Tilimsānī's technical and extensive interpretation on the said ḥadīth. The purpose of this paper is to determine the practical reflection of Tilimsānī's theoretical interpretation through Ismail Hakkı Bursevī's interpretation of the ḥadīth 'The believer is a mirror of his fellow believer', and, therefore, to also point out the coherence and continuity of the Akbarian Sufis' methods and the knowledge that they derived from them. Additionally, by using Tilimsānī's abovementioned classification as a starting point, we have identified and elaborated on Bursevī's interpretations on the said ḥadīth as interpretations of outer (ẓāhirī) for those about the believers belonging to the human genus (al-mu'min al-basharī), inner (bāṭinī) for those concerning the believers of the jinn or angelic genus (al-mu'min al-jinnī va'l-malakī), and as for those that are related to God the Faithful (Al-Mu'min) is where the outer and inner were separated/ḥadd united/maṭla'. Included in the appendix is a critical edition of Sharḥ Qawlihi 'Alayhi al-Salām: Al-Mu'min Mir'āt al-Mu'min. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
