This article shares research regarding handwritten field notes that have been preserved in a folder entitled 'Irish Folk Tale' in Box 29 of the Flaherty Papers held in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University in the City of New York. The box contains the papers of Robert J. Flaherty and Frances H. Flaherty (Director and collaborator, respectively, of the 1934 feature film, Man of Aran) as well as papers of their children - Barbara, Frances and Monica. The author connects the folktales at Columbia University with similar folklore catalogued in the National Folklore Collection at University College Dublin. In addition to deciphering the field notes and focusing on one tale contained in the collection, the author speculates as to the identity of the storyteller, the translator and the collector.
