Hydroxyethyl ligninsulfonate (HELS) was reacted with Phenyl N-(3-cyanato-4-methylphenyl)carbamate (I) to form an associated NCO capped polymer with trace amounts of lignin (HELSPU). Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic spectroscopy was used to assure the identity of this product. HELSPU was crosslinked to cellulose with carbamoyl linkages. Two fabrics, 3.6 and 7.8 oz/yd2 were treated with HELSPU and HELSPU/DMDHEU at I%, 3%, and 6% intended add-on of HELSPU and with DMEDHEU alone. Analysis of variance followed by pair-wise comparisons was used to detect differences in durable press rating (DP), dimensional stability, weight loss, color change, lightness-index difference, breaking load and extension, and abrasion resistance. Results show HELSPU contributes to DP and dimensional stability but further study is needed. HELSPU treated fabrics showed exceptionally low weight loss when compared to HELSPU/DMDHEU and DMDHEU. The results of overall color change and lightness-index difference are reported for possible indications of finish stability. The successful crosslinking of HELSPU to cotton cellulose calls for future investigations to examine synthesis procedures for increasing lignin content and processing conditions for applying lignin polyurethanes.
