Abstract (English):
Two cases of so-called granulomatous orchitis were investigated by means of electron microscopy to clarify the nature of the contested large eosinophilic cells with PAS-positive granules in the cytoplasm. Since the first description by Gruenberg (1926), there has been some discussion as to whether these cells are of 'sertolic' or reticulohistiocytic origin. Electron microscope examination has proved a morphologic as well as a functional similarity between these contested cells and macrophages. Structures characteristic of Sertoli cells have not been found. The PAS-positive granules turned out to be large phagosomes or residual bodies. One important observation is the numerous phagocyted bacteria in both cases; bacteria have never previously been demonstrated in this disease. Furthermore, calcium-containing inclusions (calcospherules) such as occur in malakoplakia of the bladder and testes were found. The question as to whether there is any difference between granulomatous orchitis and malakoplakia is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
