The article presents an introductory note to the relationship between music and academia with an emphasis on the field of history. It is argued that more attention should be dedicated to the study of music from an historical perspective and that historians and academics in general must not shy away from the study of music because of the understandable difficulties that are incorporated in such an endeavor. On the contrary, it is claimed that in light of the fact that music is the most social form of art, it therefore makes for an ultimate candidate to be studied from an historical approach, which should be accordingly executed from within a multidisciplinary methodology that would encapsulate both elements of culture history and social history.
