Michael Oakeshott recognized the existence of categorially distinct modes of being related that, while subsisting in conjunction with one another, could not be reduced to any particular one. This recognition was shared by Edward Shils, who wrote of the incommensurate plurality of orientations of the human mind; and by Max Weber when he wrote of both the types of social action and the various directions of the religious rejections of the world. While this convergence is of interest, it is especially so insofar as it helps us to understand better the nature of human cognition and action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
