The paper describes how the UK Regulations are based on the EuropeanDrinking Water Directive and how they are monitored and enforced in England and Wales. Some results are given showing the impact of enforcement over a 7-year period. The Inspectorate is responsible for investigating incidents and is able to initiate a prosecution against a water company if water unfit for human consumption has been supplied. Particular emphasis is given to Cryptosporidium as giving the greatest concern in drinking water to public health. Some proposed new regulations are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
