The electrochemotherapy (ECT) is one of the ways for cancer treatment to be enhanced by promoting the transport of chemotherapeutic drugs such as cisplatin and bleomycin to which the cell membrane is normally impermeable or poorly permeable. A local applied electric field changes the permeability of the membrane allowing intracellular accumulation of the chemotherapic agent. From April 2009 in our clinic has treated with ECT a group of patients with cancers of the head and neck and also tumors that are very extensive and there cannot be treated in a first instance with a standard treatment. The electrical pulses were applied to 33 lesions in 15 patients after an intravenous bolus injection with a dose of 15000 IU/m2 of bleomycin. In this study we present three patients treated with ECT after failure of initial treatment with surgery and / or radiotherapy. Eight lesions were treated, all of these with a diameter less than 3 cm, with a complete response of 100% of lesions treated. Our study confirmed the effectiveness of ECT in the treatment of recurrent head and neck tumors in patients that are not compatible with a treatment using current therapeutic options. In the future ECT technique could be considered a viable alternative in the treatment of primary tumors of the head and neck.
