Textual analysis is a methodology that researchers use to understand how people make meaning of texts. Researchers have used textual analysis to study advertising, films, political debates, medical documents, and business manuals, to cite a few examples. Although textual analysis has been used by researchers in a wide range of disciplines, it is especially associated with cultural studies and media studies. The term is sometimes used to refer to a range of methodologies used to study texts, including content analysis and discourse analysis, but in communications studies, it most commonly refers to qualitative analysis heavily influenced by Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure and French literary critic Roland Barthes.
