Independent or “indie” film is the production of motion pictures of all varieties outside the dominant film studio system (referred to metonymously as “Hollywood,” though there are independent studios and production companies beyond Hollywood, California). The distinction is historically important because of real or perceived differences between Hollywood films and those produced outside the major studios: independent studios typically can produce only lower budgeted movies, and, because the economic pressures on box office performance for indie films are not as great, some independent films are of a subject, scope, or tone that would not be produced in Hollywood.
