Chiefs, Democracy, and Development in Contemporary Africa.

The article explores the state of the traditional chieftaincy across sub-Saharan Africa at the time of their independence. Topics covered include the reduction by post-independence governments of the legal powers of chiefs over local administration and justice systems, the significant political authority that traditional leaders still have even if they been institutionalized over the past three decades, and the increased interest that they get from political leaders and policymakers.
