Encountering "Elephants" and Third Spaces in Difficult Texts.

In this article, the author explains how an article sent to her by a friend prompted her to revise the assignments for an African American literature course. Topics discussed include need to promote inequitable learning environments for African American students; information on literary texts of book "Invisible Man" which helps prepare the students for the unit; and need to engage students to negotiate new understandings of the history.
