Here's the lesson: Whether you retrofit old training for virtual delivery or develop new training to directly address the new business environment, never assume that all employees are on equal footing and are equitably trained in all necessary competencies. Expert panels are a simple way to assess learners on core competencies by facilitating interactions with key customers or company stakeholders that mirror typical real-world interactions post-training. Because of travel restrictions and budgetary constraints, the training team replaced that entire training phase with a series of virtual training sessions followed by a brief practice call with a manager to certify basic competencies. The shift in training has been full of creative solutions as companies have adapted to the virtual environment; yet - somewhat surprisingly - training assessment has too often been an afterthought.
