GREENE In October, Major General Nathanael Greene was promoted to commander of the disorganized Continental Army in the South. GATES Lincoln was replaced by Major General Horatio Gates, who rushed his troops to South Carolina. Although most battles ended in defeat, Sumter led about 1,000 American militiamen in their first victory over British troops led by Tarleton in the Battle of Blackstock's Farm in November 1780.
