When the adobe and sod structures were completed in the spring of 1860, the post was officially named Fort Larned in honor of U.S. Army paymaster general Colonel Benjamin F. Larned. Exhibits also describe the conflicts affecting Native Americans, traders, soldiers, and Indian agents in and around Fort Larned.
