COPD is an umbrella term for lung diseases (including emphysema and chronic bronchitis) that obstruct airflow and interfere with breathing. The lungs of both genders contain receptors for sex hormones, and these play a role in the risk of death and lung disease. This means women have less spare tissue that can function when parts of the lungs are damaged by asthma, lung cancer, and COPD.
