'Some presence inevitably shows through': Harold Stewart's Haiku Versions.
The article deals with the translation of haiku from Japanese to English by Australian author and poet Harold Stewart. His version of a Matsuo Bashō poem was compared to that of author Makoto Ueda. It raises concern on Stewart's extension of formal requirements to include rhyme in translating haiku. Stewart attacked Japanese-American scholar and translator Kenneth Yasuda's "Japanese Haiku: Its Essential Nature and History" through his book "A Net of Fireflies."
