ROBERT STEININGER and his wife, Anh, shopped for a second home on the East End for five years before they stumbled across a ''modern barn'' built on speculation by Plum Builders of East Hampton. They loved the gabled design of the five-bedroom five-bath clapboard home, with its vaulted wood-planked ceilings and ''open and unique layout.'' And unlike other spec homes, it had a high-tech component, starting with the two 52-inch televisions included in the price, one mounted on the stone fireplace in the living room, the other in the master bedroom.
