purpose: to assess the
survival pattern and predictors of mortalityamong patients admitted with covid-19 to the treatment centers in oromia region
ethiopia
from april 01 to august 31
2021. methods and materials: prospective cohort study design was employed
taking sample of 854patients selected from eight treatment centers in the region. the follow-up duration is thetime interval fromadmission to the treatment center until the final disposition ofpatients at discharge(death
recovery or failed to recover). the data were collected by interviewer-administered questionnaire and checklist designed using cspro 7.5. the data were collected by computer tablet and exported to stata-13 for analysis. descriptive analysis was used to explore the characteristics ofpatients . the mortality rate was estimated by number of deaths per 1000person -days ofobservation . thesurvival duration was estimated bymedian along with interquartile range(iqr ). kaplan–meier method was used to compare thesurvival experiences ofpatients . to identify the predictors oftime -to-death after hospitalization
cox proportionalhazard model was used. the magnitude of association was estimated usinghazard ratio(hr) with 95%ci and the statistical significance was declared for p-value < 0.05. results: per study findings
the mortality rateamong hospitalizedpatients was9 .9 per 1000 person -days ofobservation and themedian survival time after admission was9 days with9 to10 iqr .higher hazard ofdeath wasobserved among patients who drink alcohol (ahr =2.0
95%ci:1.2
3.3)
required anticoagulant (ahr =10
91.5)
glucocorticoid (ahr =1.7
95%ci:1.1
2.8) and oxygen(ahr =4.7
22.0)
patientwho has acute respiratory distress syndrome(ards) (ahr =2.9
95%ci:1.7
5.1) and critical patient admitted to intensive care unit(icu) (ahr =3.4
95%ci:2.0
5.9 ). conclusion: thehazard ofdeath is significantly predicted byalcohol use
being a patientwho requires anticoagulant
glucocorticoid
and oxygen medications
developed ards complication and being critical patient admitted to icu
