England is one of the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom, located in northwestern Europe. It occupies the southern part of the island of Great Britain, with coastlines on the English Channel, the North Sea, and the Irish Sea. England was the home of the British Empire, which controlled colonies all over the world from the seventeenth century until the mid-twentieth century.
