In his autobiography, Thomas Hobbes (HOBZ) tells a story, possibly apocryphal, regarding the circumstances of his birth and the relation of those circumstances to his political ideas. His mother, Hobbes says, was much alarmed by the approaching Spanish Armada, and her disquiet led to his premature birth on April 5, 1588.
