New Zealand is a collection of islands located 2,012 kilometers (1,250 miles) southeast of Australia in the South Pacific Ocean. The country consists of two large islands and a series of small islands. A former British colony, New Zealand is currently a Commonwealth realm and is known for its picturesque landscapes and its indigenous Polynesian culture, represented by the Māori, who settled the islands around 800 CE.
