Ohio, the Buckeye State, was formed from territory acquired by the Treaty of Paris at the end of the American Revolution. It entered the Union on March 1, 1803, as the seventeenth state. Lake Erie forms Ohio’s northern border. Elsewhere, the state is bordered by Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
